TIP TUESDAY: "Defensive Ammo Vs Range Ammo" WITH RICK HOGG

In this guide, Rick Hogg from War Hogg Tactical will discuss the importance of testing different types of ammunition for self-defense purposes and how to do it properly. Rick emphasize the use of ballistic gelatin to assess the performance of various projectiles when fired from your firearm. Rick also highlight the significance of simulating real-world scenarios by adding clothing or similar materials to the gelatin block.

Here's how you can perform your own ammunition test:

Step 1: Gather your materials

Obtain ballistic gelatin or a suitable ballistic testing medium. If you can't find ballistic gelatin locally, you can search online for alternatives.

Ensure you have your chosen ammunition, including both full metal jacket and hollow point rounds.

Step 2: Set up your test

Prepare the ballistic gelatin block by following the manufacturer's instructions. This typically involves mixing and heating the gelatin until it solidifies.

Place the gelatin block in a location where it's safe to fire your rounds into it. Make sure to have a clear and safe shooting environment.

Step 3: Safety first

Always prioritize firearm safety. Check and double-check that your firearm is unloaded before conducting any tests.

Follow all firearm safety protocols and guidelines, including the safe direction of fire, wearing appropriate safety gear (eyes and ears protection), and knowing your target and what lies beyond it.

Step 4: Conduct the test

Load your firearm with the full metal jacket round.

Step back to a safe distance and conduct a safety check to ensure everything is in order.

Fire the full metal jacket round into the gelatin block.

Load your firearm with the hollow point round.

Repeat the safety check and fire the hollow point round into the gelatin block.

Step 5: Analyze the results

Examine the gelatin block to see how the rounds performed. The full metal jacket round may have exited the block, while the hollow point may remain partially within.

Cut open the block to better understand how the rounds penetrated and expanded.

Consider the implications of your findings. The hollow point may offer better stopping power in self-defense situations by reducing over-penetration.

Step 6: Choose the right ammunition

Based on your test results, make an informed decision about which ammunition is best for your self-defense needs. High-quality jacketed hollow points are often preferred for self-defense because they are more likely to stay within the target, reducing the risk to bystanders.

By conducting these ammunition tests, you can ensure you have the right ammunition to protect yourself and your family in the event of a self-defense encounter. Stay safe and well-prepared.
