TIP TUESDAY: DOUBLING THE DISTANCE
Red dots on pistols are becoming more and more prevalent on the range. They allow the shooter to double the distance and still maintain the time standard. Typically, 25 yards used to be the threshold of where you would push the distance to get a high probability hit under time for a practical application. But now, we can very easily take shots at 50 yards while maintaining the same time standards.
Enclosed optics allow you to pick up the red dot on a clear target and break the shot; rather than lining up all your irons, negotiating on a blurry target and then breaking the shot. Especially when your sights are covering up the size of the target at 50 yards. With a red dot, you can see your target and what's around it. Staying threat focused while breaking your shots is key.
Getting a sight picture, watching that red dot sight settle on to the target – you can break your shots and get good reliable hits roughly the same time it would take for solid hits at 10 or 12 yards. It used to be outlandish shooting longer distances with pistols, especially trying to hit sub-two second times on draws at 25 yards. This is where the evolution of pistol red dot sights begin.
